El primer BMW Serie 3 fabricado en Brasil fue autografiado por todos los operarios de la nueva planta ubicada en Araquari, en el estado de Santa Catarina.

El primer BMW Serie 3 fabricado en Brasil no va a pasar desapercibido. Lleva en su piel nada menos que la firma de los 1.300 operarios de esta nueva planta que la automotriz alemana inauguró ayer en Araquari, al norte del estado de Santa Catarina, muy cerca de Joinville.

La nueva fábrica -quizás por el momento sea más correcto decir la ensabladora- está preparada para sacar varios modelos de BMW basados en su plataforma de autos compactos. El primero fue el más emblemático y vendido en Brasil, un sedán Serie 3 Active Flex, pero a fin de mes la planta ya empezará a producir el X1 y el año que viene será el turno de los Serie 1, X3 y el Mini Countryman.

Como decíamos, por ahora los autos solamente son ensamblados a partir de kits completos importados de Alemania, pero a partir del año que viene empezarán a funcionar las etapas de soldadura y pintura. «No todas las piezas vienen de afuera. Ya tenemos proveedores locales para los asientos, por ejemplo» señaló el presidente de BMW do Brasil, Arturo Piñeiro.

La fábrica de Araquari tiene 500.000 metros cuadrados pavimentados y se estima que emplea en forma directa a 1.300 trabajadores, más 2.500 puestos de trabajo indirectos en la región, cuando la planta esté trabajando a capacidad máxima de producción. BMW espera poder sacar 30 mil autos anuales en el futuro, mientras las previsiones para 2015 son de entre 15 a 18 mil vehículos.

Por ahora, los autos de la nueva planta brasileña no llegarán a Argentina. «Nuestra prioridad es atender la mercado brasileño, todavía no tenemos las condiciones para exportar pero, si mañana la tuviéramos, estamos preparados para expandirnos y atender el mercado latinoamericano», dijo Piñeiro.

La fábrica de BMW llega un poco tarde al boom de consumo de productos premium que tuvo Brasil en los años precedentes y con la incertidumbre de quién gobernará el país los próximos años. «Estamos viviendo un momento de incertidumbre, no sabemos exactamente lo que va a pasar después de este periodo electoral. Pero independientemente de quién sea el nuevo Presidente, una cosa es cierta: 2015 va a ser un año difícil», advirtió Piñeiro.

BMW Group assembles first car in Brazil

Araquari/Munich Today, the BMW Group celebrated the first car to be assembled in its new South American automobile plant in Araquari, Santa Catarina State (Brazil). Over the course of the next few years, more than 200 million Euros will be invested in the plant, resulting in a production capacity of more than 30,000 vehicles annually. The first car to roll off the assembly line in Araquari is a BMW 328i ActiveFlex. This car is specifically designed for the flexible use of either ethanol or petrol and thus meets the special requirements of the Brazilian market. The new site will create around 1,300 new jobs; 500 new employees are already on board. Further jobs will be created within the supplier network of the new plant.

All construction on the production site is due to be completed by September 2015, by which time the site will comprise also a body shop and a paint shop. The facility will also include administrative and auxiliary infrastructure as well as logistic activities. The plant is scheduled to produce the following models: MINI Countryman, BMW 1 Series 5-door model, BMW 3 Series Sedan, BMW X1, and BMW X3.

The new BMW Group site covers an area of about 1.5 million square meters of which 500,000 paved square meters will be used for production. By adding a new plant in Brazil, the BMW Group is further expanding its global production network, which now includes 30 production and assembly sites in 14 countries on four continents.

The BMW Group aims to achieve balanced growth in all markets and on all continents. Harald Krüger, Member of the Management Board of BMW AG responsible for production, commented in Munich, “The new plant in Brazil will be an important element in our international production network and will make a significant contribution to the BMW Group’s profitable and globally balanced growth. Our strategic principle of ‘production follows the market’ has previously proven effective in countries such as the US and China and will also ensure our success in Brazil, an important future market.” Arturo Piñeiro, President and CEO of BMW Group Brazil, explained, “With our new plant in Araquari, we are strengthening our commitment to Brazil and adding a further milestone in the BMW Group’s long-term growth strategy. Brazil is a market with tremendous potential for the future.”

The production site is located in Araquari, a town in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina. This allows the BMW Group to draw on the infrastructure established in Joinville, located about 20 kilometers north of the new plant. The BMW Group set up a training center for the new plant at Joinville’s Perini Business Park in July 2013. “The centerpiece of the training centre is an assembly line. It was created specifically for training purposes and complies with our global BMW Group production standard. And it is the ideal place for us to thoroughly prepare our associates for their work on the real production line. This training allows us to build cars according to our highest quality standards, which are the same worldwide, be it in Germany, China or here in Brazil”, said Gerald Degen, Head of BMW Group Araquari plant.

In 1995, the BMW Group founded its National Sales Organization in Brazil, followed in 1999 by the setup of a Financial Sales Company for Brazil. Since 2009, the company has been building motorcycles in Manaus, Brazil.
